Over the past two years, I’ve been developing lessons on numeral systems for middle schoolers. I’ve been doing this work for a fellowship project as a student Mt. Holyoke’s Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics.
When trialing the lessons, I’ve found that exploring different numerals has the power to both broaden and deepen students’ mathematical thinking.
Here the Launch Lesson, where students debate about the origin of numbers and are exposed to different number words and numerals!
Before I share all of the lessons for free on a website, I’m looking to hold a zoom sessions with a small group of educators to get feedback on the lessons.
The session will be Saturday, May 3 at 12pm PST / 3pm EST, 2025. It will last 70 minutes.
During the session, you’ll:
-Engage in a few math activities
-Explore one historical numeral system in depth
– Reflect on how studying numeral systems from around the world can impact students
– Get access to 10 ready-to-use lessons
