{"id":137,"date":"2017-08-04T00:10:46","date_gmt":"2017-08-04T00:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thoughtwelledu.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/04\/the-global-achievement-gap-and-goals-for-a-new-school-year\/"},"modified":"2021-03-15T23:07:55","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T06:07:55","slug":"the-global-achievement-gap-and-goals-for-a-new-school-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hailstonesequence.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/04\/the-global-achievement-gap-and-goals-for-a-new-school-year\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The Global Achievement Gap&#8221; and goals for a new school year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During PD at my new school, we spent an hour reading the first chapter of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/3035004-the-global-achievement-gap\">&#8220;The Global Achievement Gap&#8221;<\/a> by Tony Wagner. Although I can&#8217;t speak to the whole book, the first chapter helped me synthesize my goals for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to increase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>opportunities for student feedback on lessons\/projects\/the class as a whole<\/li><li>self-directed learning and opportunities for students to take initiative<\/li><li>availability and use of tools (both physical manipulatives as well as technology)<\/li><li>teamwork (self-directed teams)<\/li><li>use of open-ended projects that require students to\n<ul>\n<li>determine what the important questions are (what needs to be &#8220;found out&#8221; to solve the problem)<\/li>\n<li>gather information from a variety of sources<\/li>\n<li>ask questions about which information is valuable<\/li>\n<li>synthesize a large amount of data\/information<\/li>\n<li>communicate their results\/thinking clearly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li><li>inquiry-based lessons that require students to use\/develop their critical thinking skills to get to what&#8217;s important<\/li><li>use of questions with more than one right answer<\/li><li>opportunities to create beautiful\/artistic work<\/li><li>ways that students are asked to communicate their ideas and understanding<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A big goal of mine is to design projects\/units that allow students to use their mathematical skills to investigate (a) science\/engineering and (b)social justice&#8230;..but I don&#8217;t feel ready to tackle that quite yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do I want to communicate to my students on a daily basis? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>your thinking is valuable regardless of whether you&#8217;re right or wrong<\/li><li>math should make sense to you (as in math is about sense-making not as in &#8220;WHY DON&#8217;T YOU GET IT, DAMNIT!)<\/li><li>you need to be an active learner and take responsibility for your own understanding (knowing that I&#8217;m here to help &#8211; but can&#8217;t do the hard part for you)<\/li><li>engaging with other students&#8217; mathematical ideas is interesting and important<\/li><li>tackling a problem that you don&#8217;t know how to solve straight away is doing mathematics<\/li><li>learning happens in leaps and bounds when we make mistakes and work through them (one of the best feelings in the world is &#8220;I used to think ____ but now I think _____ and maybe I&#8217;ll think something different in the future.&#8221;)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;more to come!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently discovered MTBOS and I&#8217;m so excited to join the community.
